(copied from a reply): I got some good answers when I asked other people about this. From what I understand, it's basically that because what you borrow from the library or a friend is under the friend or library's control of when to return it, and not your own of when to 'delete' it. Even if you may end up buying product later, if it's under your control, then there is no definite time when you have to delete it, therefore making it different with a library or a friend.

It really isn't. But libraries are county funded and all so I guess that makes it more "right" in society's eyes. Also, libraries pay for their material and you only get it for a limited time.

my local library has the entire collection of the tv show Farscape on DVD (and many other popular or indie movies) on loan for free, for like half a month. c.c
